About the Department of Virus & Microbiological Special Diagnostics

The Department of Virus & Microbiological Special Diagnostics at Statens Serum Institut performs diagnostics and provides clinical guidance and consultancy service for viral infections and serology. The Department is the national central laboratory for human and veterinary virology, including surveillance of viral infections as well as research and development within the field. The Department is divided into seven sections with focus on Serology, Virus Research and Development, Virus Surveillance and Research, Virus PCR-analysis, Influenza, Veterinary Virology and Virus Diagnostic Preparedness.

The Department collaborates with the University of Copenhagen in the Danish Veterinary Consortium. The consortium provides research, laboratory diagnostics, consultancy and surveillance of 80 different livestock diseases as described in a service agreement with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. SSI hosts Safety-Level-4 laboratory facilities for analysis of foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever and also comprises the national WHO Centers on influenza, polio and measles/rubella.

The Department of Virus & Microbiological Special Diagnostics has approx. 120 employees including laboratory technicians, molecular biologists, veterinarians, medical doctors and office clerks as well as researchers, PhD-students and Postdocs.

About the Position

As Head of the Department of Virus & Microbiological Special Diagnostics, you are responsible for the daily management of the department to ensure the diagnostic preparedness for infection in a one-health perspective with synergy between laboratory diagnostics in humans and animals.  

We are looking for a strong leader, who can contribute to the Statens Serum Institute’s strategic agenda to provide high quality laboratory diagnostics with a focus on research and development. 

You will refer to the Executive Vice President of Diagnostic Infectious Disease Preparedness and will be a part of the management group at SSI.

Your tasks will be the following:

  • Responsible for forming the strategic direction of the research activities and strengthen research collaborations with national and international partners
  • Responsible for forming the strategic preparedness plan including ensuring a robust organization
  • Strengthen the collaboration with the local clinical microbiology departments and with The Food and Drug Administration to ensure relevant human and veterinarian diagnostics/surveillance
  • To strengthen and develop the cooperation between various groups of employees and across departments in Diagnostic Infectious Disease Preparedness area
  • Responsible for the budget of the Department

Your Background, Professional and Personal Qualifications

We expect that you have a relevant education within life science/medicine/veterinary profession and extensive professional and research experience within virology. We expect that you have management experience/qualities and collaboration skills, because the head of department must be able to facilitate cooperation between many different personnel groups. You are ambitious, dedicated and innovative, have relational competencies and can motivate your employees.

  • good relational skills build upon transparency and knowledge sharing, both in the department, in the organization and externally

Terms of Employment

You will be employed according to ”Rammeaftalen om kontraktansættelse af chefer i staten”. The position is in group 1/pay scale 37 and will be on a fixed-term contract of 5 years.
